This concerns my godchild's sister (19), living in a reasonably desirable passport country. Boyfriend is from conservative background, they have video-chatted, so he's real. Something is off, and I can't quite put my finger on it. She showed me a picture of him in uniform, which raised several red flags. The name badge and insignia seem off / fake / photoshopped, color does not seem to be in line with any armed forces uniform from his country, not to mention he looks way older than he claims to be. Dude has now conveniently disappeared off the face of the earth. Haven't looked into those scams in a while, so out of practice. He has never asked her for money. I think he's using her for her passport (this happened to a school friend, and the stories were very similar, hence my concern), my god-daughter reckons it's for cyber sex. They are both conservative, so this is a huge deal. She has spoken to a close family member (female) of his.
I've had friends who met online, across countries, and couldn't be happier, and I've witnessed friends getting scammed, and this situation shows more signs of those stories than the ones ending happily. Any way to check if he's dead or alive, or scamming her?
What's the scam if he's not asking for money

Re: What's the scam if he's not asking for money
What do you mean by "using her for her passport"? His hoping that she'll sponsor him to get quick approval for a visa? You and the potential victim seem well aware that something is amiss which is good. He seems to have moved on before attempting to initiate his scam. I'd do the same. If he isn't a scammer then he's just a prick for ghosting your godchild's sister. If he was a scammer then she is fortunate that he disappeared.

I bet he's gonna use her passport so he can steal it and re-use it for another scam.

Askingforafriend welcome to eater. This is not a site for scam victims, we do have a sister site for scam victims called http://scamwarners.com. If you believe someone you know may be a victim of a scam that would be the appropriate site to visit. As scammers do occasionally find this site, please do not post any personal details about yourself or your family here - you have not done so thus far, I say this only as caution for future posts.
As for your situation, we do not have enough information to know if your Godchild's sister's friend is a scammer, trying to use her to enter her country via marriage/visa fraud or is just a guy meeting ladies online and telling lies about himself. Either way, it sounds like there are enough reasons for her to be cautious. As for finding out if he is a scammer, you might try uploading his photos to http://images.google.com or https://yandex.com/images/ There are other sites that deal specifically with topics such as marriage fraud and people will load images of known fraudsters there. If the images match those used in scams before you might get a match. Also, you could try searching for his email and phone online.
