Roy Peterson returns

Post by DerekTrotter1981 » Sun Jul 12, 2020 2:53 pm

A while ago, I got an email from a lad calling himself "Roy Peterson" but his initial contact was a bit...boring. Yesterday, he made a comeback and has a new target: Daenerys Targaryen. This is what he first sent to her:
I have a project of 4.5 million usd for you email me back on how to proceed
Daenerys replied and said:
Do you really? Tell me more.

Yours faithfully

Daenerys Targaryen
She got a reply, the next day when Roy sent her this email:
Greetings to you and everyone around you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Amen.

No "I'm dying of X" scheme is complete without a dying picture and Peterson was no different. He attached this picture of him, supposedly on his deathbed.

Daenerys wrote back to express her condolences and said:
Salutations Mr. Peterson

Your condition is a terrible shame, and just as you tell me there is nothing to worry about, I say the same to you. Be rest assured that I can be as best a Samaritan as possible.

As you can see, my name is Daenerys Targaryen but I am also known as Daenerys Stormborn among other names like these: The Silver Queen, Silver Lady, The Dragon Queen, The Queen Across the Water and The Princess that was Promised. At present, I am proud to live in the city of Oxford, one of the UK's most picturesque counties and home one of the country's most renowned universities.

I regret to say, however, that I do not possess a phone number, so your best chance for a phone number is a friend who calls himself "Lenny". When you phone him, just ask for Daenerys (my name is pronounced "dayn-air-iss").

Just as you attach a picture of yourself, I return the favour and attach a picture of myself.

Yours faithfully

Daenerys Targaryen
(Oxford is where Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones grew up)

Just as Peterson attached a picture of himself on his deathbed, Daenerys returned the favor. This is that picture.

...Sum of 4.5 Million Usd...which is the total money I got after selling all my properties and investments in United Kingdom.
So he basically sold one or two parking spaces in central London somewhere? Nice of him to sell London assets, deposit the proceeds into a UK-based bank, yet quote financial figures is USD even though the two of you are in Britain

Yeah, like I said, USD does seem to be the default currency of lads (currency in this context is the amount they promise or "charge", not the payment gateway).

^^^ Maybe, but you can pretty much bet that if your character requests clarification and asks the lad "Do you want me to MG you the 1,500 in dollars, euros, or pounds" that they will gladly choose and accept pounds. At MG at least, the reciever can choose to collect the money in a different currency that what the sender specified on the receipt. They set the conversion rate in those instances...to the benefit of MG of course ;) The last sentence of Section B7 of their guidelines/terms (link below) explains that racket. It could be a handy way for lads to add credibility to their story. Lad says he is from UK but in Nigeria for business handling things with the Central Bank to expedite the release of your funds  He requests you pay in pounds because the transaction will route through British intermediaries etc. The payment is made and the lad asks MG for Naira instead unbeknownst to the victim.

Alexander wrote back with this email in which he included perhaps the flimsiest excuse of a password ever. Which gave Dany the perfect opportunity to complain. Here's how that correspondence went:

Daenerys to Alexander:
Mr. Crombie

Surely Peterson couldn't have made his password as flimsy as 1234567. Are you not worried about the possibility that you could come under attack from illicit parties?

Do you have adequate layers of security on your side as well, Alexander?

Yours hopefully

Daenerys Targaryen
Alexander to Daenerys:
Everything is ok as the password can be changed anytime by the beneficiary.
Daenerys to Alexander:
Are you sure? Some other illicit parties could just come in and change the password themselves.

How do you know that they couldn't be tracing our conversation right now?
Alexander to Daenerys:
This transaction and conversation are 100% security guaranteed.
Daenerys to Alexander:
Okay, well I'll have to take your word for that.

But can Peterson be trusted? How do you know that he isn't going to call the police on me for stealing all of his money?

Sorry for so many questions, but this feels like a difficult situation to find myself in.
While Alexander was thinking of a response, Daenerys wrote back to Roy in an attempt to inject some sensse of fear into him:
Hello Roy

I have heard back from Alexander, but he is effectively asking me to steal from you. Cam you believe that?!

Have you asked him to deal with this, knowing that you will be robbed of your money?

Please reply as soon as possible

Daenerys Targaryen
Alexander wrote back with this email:
Roy Peterson can be 100% trusted. He can't call police for you because he is the one that gave you the money.
Daenerys had one last email to Alexander where she just asked:
Roy Peterson can be trusted, Alexander. Can you?
Alexander just said one word: "Yes", and then Daenerys didn't bother to reply for the rest of the day.

I've also had him going for a couple days now  He's my very first lad! I didn't give a phone number because unfortunately it was turned off for nonpayment...but of course my character has received some money from friends and the government and should be able to have it turned back on any day now. (But we all know how the phone companies are...I forsee her having some trouble getting her phone reconnected.) She also, for some reason, doesn't have a pdf viewer on her computer and needs help getting one. I haven't contacted the attorney yet, I'm kinda still trying to get Roy to go off-script lol

I'm assuming it is mostly safe to open attachments like the photo and the deposit certificate, since I've seen a lot of them posted...is that right?

He's your first lad, is he? Interesting!

Well... the email which I got the "deposit certificate" was marked as phishing but in my experience, attachments are largely pictures or documents made by lads. I don't recommend clicking on any links that a lad may send to you (unless it's an email link, because all that's going to do is to send you to compose a new email).

You can open pictures from lads, but I don't recommend opening anything else from them like compressed files.

Yep, I was looking at scamwarners and found his email and went from there. I want to try to keep him going at least until after he's supposed to have his "operation" next week...I'd love to try to string him along for 2 months, but that may be wishful thinking due to my lack of experience.

Yeah, in my experience in dealing with "I'm dying of X" scammers, they don't tend to stay around for very long. Probably because these lads are at the bottom of the food chain in the scam operation.

Now, I can understand why clicking on phishing links is strongly discouraged because a phishing link can do anything, from infect a computer with malware or whatever or try to get valuable information (there's a reason these emails are called "phishing" links), but Daenerys did just that. She copied the link provided to her by Alexander and opened it in an incognito browser. Below are what she found:

(The below shots were initially opened in an incognito browser but had to be taken in an actual browser in order to take screenshots and make this post. Details that were provided were A) fake and B) never sent to the lad)

9For a close up, the details that Daenerys supplied were the Bank name in the form of the Royal British Bank (which has been defunct since 1856), a bank address, her name (Daenerys Targaryen) and an account number.

Following her investigation of the site, Daenerys wrote straight to Netcraft and said:
Hi

This link is provided by an advance fee scammer who is posing as the Royal Bank of Scotland, in order to scam people. The link leads to a fake RBS login page which an unsuspecting victim will be asked to login to.

Once logged in, an unsuspecting victim will be asked to fill in their bank details in order to transfer a non existent fund of 45 Million USD. Please take steps to shut down this site. Innocent people are being scammed. Please act urgently.
Netcraft did just that; about ten minutes after her report, they wrote back the results of her report: The lad site was classsed as a phishing site, and when Daenerys checked back to see the site again, this is what she got:
Phishing site results.png
Phishing site results.png (22.98 KiB) Viewed 7130 times
When Daenerys visited the link again, she saw the above attachment but took another screencap, corrupted it and sent it to Alexander with an accompanying message:
Dear Alexander

I tried to visit the link you provided, but when I tried to get it, I saw this.

Please reply as soon as possible

I feel like I'm repeating myself a bit here, but this is not phishing. Phishing is not AFF. In the extreme vast majority of lad sites there's no malware or other nasties as they want you to visit the site. If they send you to their site and it infects you with something they're not going to get their payday and the whole exercise has been a tremendous waste of time for them. Malware sending actors do exist, but they're a completely different tier of cyber-criminal and you're not going to find them here.

Usually flagging it in safe-browsing is a last resort as it can really mess up a lot of stuff. Please follow the advice you were given because: a) there was little point in asking for advice if you're not going to even follow it and b) by doing anything to the contrary you can mess things up for other people. There are established systems in place for a reason.

What's the best recourse here in this situation Palmergeddon? The screen shots make it relatively clear that the lad provided the site in question to add some credibility regarding the millions of dollars promised to the baiter are real. User (baiter in this case) info provided to the scammer in terms of their bank account details are sent across to the filthy criminal via the website once they fill in those details and click the "submit" button etc. I know nothing about Netcraft so is the legit/recommended method is to try to shutter the site all together by reporting it to aa419.org? The site itself may not be officially classified as a phishing site but it does appear to be used to perpetuate crime(s).

It still amazes me that victims fall for this nonsense given that the URL to the site is a bit sketchy if you actually look at the address itself. Even so, victims are technically still victims and deserve the right to be protected from these horrible monsters. Even if they are totally complicit in the wrongdoing because they just need the $. I'm pretty sure that my senile father would fall for this type of garbage all the time had he never been warned about it.

Fortunately, my sister and I physically took my pops to his bank to authorize our receiving text/email messages from the bank if he spends more than $20 bucks on anything via their "alert" service. Higher amounts ($100+) require our explicit approval now. Since then a (maybe) fake health insurance carrier and a similiarly disingenuous "local" orthodontist has already tried to sink their filthy hooks into him. Those charges were promptly declined...by one of us obviously. My sister just bought him an Alexa speaker thing for him on Father's Day last week or so and he is absolutely fascinated by it for whatever reason. I imagine that it will only be a couple of days before he is approached again by a loser trying to hoodwink him into buying "something" for "someone" online via that app from someone that he hasn't ever met yet in person. Fortunately, I convinced my sis to opt out of linking either of our Amazon Prime accounts to his new one (required for the device to work) so that he can't arbitrarily order stuff for him or any of his newfound "admirers" that supposedly subscribe to his fan club

In this situation there's no harm done. It was a free domain and those are almost always dead-ends for research. That being said, it could just as easily have been the opposite. There's been similar situations in the past where some well-intentioned baiters have tried to kill sites and inadvertently destroyed a lot of useful evidence/information that could have been used to find more fake sites or sent off to law enforcement. Where I'm from, the destruction of evidence is a very serious crime and can land you in jail for a number of years - so probably best not to make a habit of it, yeah?

Now - let's not sidetrack this thread anymore and wait to see how Alexander handles his website going down.

As I mentioned before, I'm dealing with the same 2 lads as Derek

The website has been taken down for good now. This lad's email reply went to my spam folder (that is so weird, considering this is a 100% legal risky free transaction!) so I didn't see his reply from three days ago until just now. The man from the bank hadn't written to me in a few days, so my character sent this, just to make sure he hadn't written Nell off as not being a good target (this was after the site was reported as being dangerous, but while it was still online):
Mr. Cxxxxxx,

I haven't heard back from you, so I wanted to check on the status of the transfer. I am very blessed because I recently received a federal grant in the amount of $4500, but with the COVID-19 pandemic causing financial hardship, that money is not going to last me very long, and I still have bills to pay. This donation will help ensure that my family and I will continue to be able to eat. I was unable to access the website you gave me...I don't know computers all that well, so I don't understand what went wrong. Anyway, is there another way to complete the transfer?

Thank you and god bless.
Nell
Well, he was not too happy with Nell apparently, because all he said was this:
You have to pay the bank charges.
Well okay, Mr. Prissy Pants. Geez. So that I could see what was going on with the website and give an accurate reply, I opened it in incognito mode, and surprise! 404 error. Not at all impressed, Nell sent this back:
Mr. Cxxxxxx,

When I went to the website you provided, [redacted] it says the website does not exist. I'm trying to pay the charges, why are you giving me the runaround with fake websites? This is very unprofessional of you, Mr. Cxxxxxx.

Nell.
We'll see what he says now...they may have a new website up and running by now, who knows. Either way, I've got an email in my drafts folder with some nonsense about how I talked to my bank, and I have to have the account number that the "donation" is coming from, otherwise the money will be lost and we won't be able to get it back. I'm hoping I can get an account number out of them :D
